Why meditate?

For many of us, our lives are full to the brim. Every minute of every day we have stuff to do, places to be, people needing our time. We are bombarded with TV, news, social media. In lockdown we were stressed by having nothing to do. Now we have external pressures like the fear of war, the corruption of government and the rich, the climate heating, rising costs of everything. The list in endless, the pressure relentless. Regular meditation creates a place in your life for finding peace, quiet, healing and recovery.

Meditation is taking time to pause from life to let the body and mind rest and recover. It can be sitting still doing nothing, while bringing focused attention to the meditation, or it could involve focussing that mindful attention on an activity such as exercise, artistic expression or daily tasks. It doesn’t have to be a religious or “spiritual” practice.

If you find that you are too busy to take time to meditate regularly, you probably have the greatest need to find time to stop and pause, if only briefly, but with full awareness, every day. You’ll also stand to get the most benefit.

There is a circular discussion here. If you reassess your priorities and choose to find space for meditation, the meditation can offer you insights into what priorities in life call to you.

What results can you get from meditating?

The first benefit may be intangible. By regularly taking a break to pause the body and mind, the benefit is that you are regularly taking a break to pause the body and mind. Start by stopping.
Here is yet another circular point. A conscious effort to relax, even if short, is rewarded with relaxation.
The body and the mind can take the opportunity of a pause to heal. The healing may be subtle but more dynamic and energetic practices can create more profound experiences. Meditation can have a way of finding what you need without you knowing or trying for it.

On occasions meditation has led me to places of peace, tranquility, love and joy. High energy meditation can reach these same destinations as subtle energy meditation.

Why is Cradle Meditation special?

Cradle Mediation is a lazy meditation. You don’t even have to get out of bed, so it can be ideal if it has to fit into a hectic life or as an action to address insomnia. As a tantric meditation, it can raise your levels of energy and excitation, but while you remain lying without moving.

The Cradle Meditation book is quite prescriptive providing step-by-step details on the methods. This can be a great way to start meditation without prior experience. The book also provides possibilities on specific outcomes while giving tips on how to avoid creating expectations.

As an atheist I thought I had left all that god and spirit stuff behind. I am not sure if some of experiences and generated sensations have been “spiritual” but I feel compelled to continue the journey and to provide pragmatic guidance to the skeptical reader.

My experiences and discoveries are described in the book without researching other work to preserve my own perspectives. An experienced practitioner may enjoy different approaches to seeing the dark, achieving profound relaxation and abandon, and accessing subtle and not-so-subtle energetic feelings.

What is Tantra? Isn't it all about sex?

Writing this book forced me to ponder this question and I define tantra as practices with intention and focused awareness on generating and harnessing energetic feelings in the body.

If a goal is energetic feelings in the body, adding sexual excitation (without resorting to masturbation) supercharges a tantric meditation. While this is not always required, practices that access sexual energy can train your body to harness more subtle excitation sources and thus the meditation can become suitable to practise while sitting on a bus. In return, training in tantric practices can supercharge your sex life.

With enhanced breathing, relaxation and visualisation techniques, tantric Cradle Meditation can reach crazy heights and my practice keeps delivering me surprises. I’ve had releases of stored grief and moments where I’ve felt anger dissolve into nothing. I’ve had glimpses into trippy worlds and visions that connect me to past recurring dreams. I have been high as if on drugs and felt a lurking power in my limbs. I don’t know how far this will go.
